Kier Construction were seeking to appoint a competent demolition contractor to demolish the redundant school buildings following the construction of the modern updated teaching block and sports hall. Goody Demolition were employed as a specialist subcontractor to work on the site, under the auspices of Kier acting as Principal Contractor, to dismantle the old structures and leave the site at and secure.
We were responsible for setting up the demolition site (including relevant exclusion zones), carrying out bird and bat roost investigations (alongside specialist ecologists), asbestos removal (in conjunction with our sister company; Horizon Environmental), protection to buildings and access scaolding, internal strip out, structural demolition of 5no. buildings on site (including main teaching block, mobile units and connecting hallways / link bridges), breaking out the slab and foundations and crushing operations of site-won materiel.
Due to the multi-faceted nature of the Project, the works required us to coordinate with not only Kier (Principal Contractor), but also with other contractors working on site (ground workers, asbestos removal, scaolders etc.). Shared access to the site (controlled by Kier) was utilised by all, and we communicated with teams at all times, coordinating deliveries to ensure no clashes or disruption to the site surroundings.
Ecological Reports conducted prior to works commencing revealed that bird nests were present on the site, as well as evidence of bats roosting. Buildings which had active bird nests were programmed last in sequence, to avoid nesting season and allow birds to vacate. All works in areas with suspected bat roost were thoroughly assessed by ecologists before starting works and watching brief was in operation as precautionary measures.
GDL have operated on many operational sites in the past, and our extensive experience allowed us to minimise disruption to the school and its environs during all stages. Various areas of the centre were to remain live throughout our operation, and as such we maintained constant communication and liaison with all neighbouring departments / areas and parties involved with the project, thus allowing the school to continue uninterrupted in provision of their services.
