Following a highly competitive tendering process, Goody Demolition were awarded the demolition and enabling works for the redevelopment at the College by Telereal Trillium. Contracted for strip out, structural alterations and protective works to the Wye Campus, much of which has Listed building status, GDL commenced with liaising with the Client, their team and outside consultants and authorities to determine the requirements for the works.
Once on site, acting as Principal Contractor our scope of works included installation of protective measures to electric sub-station; identifying and marking service locations; installation of hoarding/ fencing as required; setting up site welfare and compound; preparatory soft strip; asbestos removal; extensive internal strip out; demolition of various lean-to structures, sheds, portacabins, greenhouses and porches throughout the grounds; installation of protective measures to retained elements; separation of building sections to be demolished from those to
be preserved; demolition of 2-storey college building and single-storey dormitory; removal of slabs and foundations; crush and stockpile of selected arisings from the demolition to 6F2 spec and removal of unwanted debris from site.
The College of St Gregory and St Martin at Wye, commonly known as Wye College, was founded in 1447, and with nearly 600 years of history there were extensive heritage elements that were to be retained, and therefore protected, throughout the demolition works. This included furniture, windows, fireplaces and whole sections of the buildings. GDL worked closely with the client, their team and historical preservation societies to determine the most efficacious ways to transports and store items that could be removed, and install sufficient protection for elements which remained in situ.
Due to the sensitive nature of both the building itself and its surroundings, we had to implement special measures to allow us to deliver our works, including additional mitigation methods for noise, dust and vibration, as well as extensive Community Liaison with the surrounding stakeholders (incl. residential properties, businesses along the High Street and the St Gregory and St Martin Church). GDL Contract Managers and SHEQ Team members attended stakeholder consultation meetings, to explain the works to the local community and answer any questions which they may have. Working with Telereal Trillium we produced literature to assuage the fears of those who lacked confidence in the suitability of the protective measures and mitigation methods, and delivered our contractors without incident or complaint, to the satisfaction of the Client and external stakeholders.
