The demolition and enabling works to the Yellow Car Park site (located between Fulton Road, Rutherford Way and Engineer’s Way in the heart of Wembley) form part of the earlier stages of the immense Wembley Park development, situated in the shadow of the England National Football Team Stadium.
The former Yellow Car Park site will be the location for Union Park, the first major park to open in the area for 150 years. The seven-acre park will feature a bandstand, children’s play areas, sports zones and a relaxing urban meadow, creating physical and mental health benefits.
The overarching regeneration project is made up of a number of separate but interlinked development schemes, including Union Park, Canada Gardens (743no. rental homes spread across 7no. buildings), Madison (663no. homes across 4no. buildings), The Robinson (458no. flats across 3no. blocks) and North East Lands (planned for other 2,000 new properties).
Wembley Park is one of London's most exciting new neighbourhoods with award-winning public realm, and homes, and experiences. When completed, Wembley Park will be home to the largest single site of Build to Rent in the UK with almost 6,000 homes.
Working across multiple phases on the Project, GDL were employed by Harrington’s Builders on behalf of John Sisk & Son (New Build Contractor for NE02 and NE03 works at the development) to undertake the demolition and enabling works at the site of the former Yellow Car Park site.
Located along Engineer’s Way and Rutherford Way, the buildings requiring removal included the Wembley NEL Yellow Pavilion and Rutherford Way Offices, all of which required demolition to facilitate the new development.
Goody Demolition’s Scope of works included arranging Asbestos Refurbishment and Demolition surveys for a number of the buildings; disconnection of services across the site; setting up of exclusion zones, barriers and signage as required; waste and traffic management; removal of all Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) as identified on R&D surveys (carried out by Specialist Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractor and Partner Company Horizon Environmental); Scaffold and Propping Erection and Maintenance; Protection of Substation; internal soft strip; demolition of designated structures through combination of manual and mechanical techniques; removal of slabs and foundation and crushing of demolition arisings, leave site clean and clear for Client and follow-on Contractors.
Located directly in the middle of the row of offices along Rutherford Way, the existing Sub-Station was to remain in situ and thus required protection throughout the course of our works. Due to the close proximity of the substation, we had to install protection scaffold on the northern side, as well as boarding over the substation for its protection during the demolition works.
Due to the extensive redevelopment occurring within and around the Wembley Park area, there were a number of both individual and interconnected construction projects in progress whilst GDL were onsite. Our Operations Team and Contract Management liaised with our Client, Local Authority and other Contractors/Stakeholders to identify ways and means of reducing the cumulative impact of the projects on the environment and surrounding communities. We developed enhanced measures for mitigating the impact increased traffic around the site and to reduce the generation and impact of noise, dust and vibration throughout our works.
